Worth it for your operation?

Pros

  • Permanent free CRM (not a trial) with no credit card required
  • Best-in-class onboarding, docs, and ecosystem for US teams
  • Deal pipelines and reporting dashboard listed on Free
  • Clear upgrade path into HubSpot hubs without a migration

Watch-outs

  • Free caps at 2 users and 1,000 marketing/CRM contacts on current public pricing copy
  • Workflow automation that sales teams expect sits on paid hubs
  • WhatsApp is not a native free-CRM inbox
  • Growing past two seats means paying sooner than on Zoho or Agile

Score by criterion

The dark mark on each bar is the average of the 8 CRMs in this ranking. Criteria with higher weight pull the overall score more.

Pipeline on free
8.6

A deal or opportunity board you can run on the free plan without upgrading to see stages.

Automation on freeweight 1.3×
3.2

A rule, sequence, or autoresponder that fires on its own on the $0 plan. Task reminders alone do not count.

Email and reporting on free
7.8

Send or sync email inside the product, plus a sales report or dashboard beyond the pipeline board — all on the free plan.

Messaging on freeweight 0.7×
3.0

Native SMS or messaging inbox on the contact or deal on the free plan. WhatsApp Business API on free also counts. Marketplace apps, browser extensions, and paid-plan-only channels do not.

Free-plan ceilingweight 1.4×
5.2

How far the permanent $0 plan goes on users, contacts, and storage before you must pay. An expiring trial does not count as a ceiling.

Learning curveweight 0.8×
9.0

How quickly a small team can put contacts and deals into daily use on the free plan without a consultant.

Editorial analysis

HubSpot CRM in detail

HubSpot is still the CRM a US founder opens first. The free plan is permanent and polished. It is also one of the tighter free ceilings in this ranking.

Who it is for

Solo consultants and two-person shops that value ease and a future HubSpot stack over seat count. A five-person sales team that refuses to pay should start with Zoho, Agile, or Bitrix24 instead.

What drives the score

Learning curve and pipeline are top-tier. Email/reporting are solid on free. Ceiling and automation are intentionally mid-low — that is why HubSpot does not win this vertical even though it wins mindshare.

How we read the sources

Based on HubSpot’s free CRM product page (permanent free, pipelines, reporting) and CRM pricing copy that states up to two users and 1,000 contacts on free.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn’t HubSpot rank

Onboarding and pipeline quality are excellent — and the learning-curve score shows that. This vertical weights free-plan ceiling and automation higher. Two users, 1,000 contacts, and paid-tier workflows pull the overall rank below Zoho and Attio on purpose.

Does Free include email?

HubSpot’s free CRM tools include contact/deal work and broader free go-to-market tools (including email-related free tools in the suite). Native workflow automation and WhatsApp channels are not treated as free-CRM inclusions here.
